Summerhall Distillery might be most known for Pickerings Gin but have now ventured outside of the juniper spirit and launched a blended whisky under the name The Broody Hen.
This first release is a blended scotch whisky blended and bottled on site of the Summerhall Distillery from casks chosen by founders Matt Gammel and Marcus Pickering. It’s a very approachable whisky which has a sweet, yet refreshing character and would be perfect as an aperitif before dinner or on a summers day in the shade. We were welcomed with a highball styled cocktail with marmalade which also worked really well with the whisky. I really liked that you can taste both the malt and grain whisky in the blend and that it had such a refreshing character with a lovely balance of flavours.
It was so lovely to chat to the team from Summerhall Distillery at Hotel Du Vin and hear more about the whisky as well as their plans for the future because this blended whisky isn’t all that’s in the pipeline. There will also be a 10 year old single malt joining the portfolio as well as a vodka so they are definitely a brand to keep an eye on!
I have also had the pleasure of visiting the Summerhall Distillery when I did their Gin Jolly tour previously – read more here – but definitely think it’s time to head back and experience it again soon – and maybe also do the escape rooms right next door.
