Glenallachie Distillery has released a peated range of whiskies under the name Meikle Tòr and were hosting a launch event in Edinburgh at the Old Dr Bells Baths.
The initial launch consists of The Original, The Sherry One, The Chinquapin One and The Turbo. They all have a character where fresh fruits meet bonfire smoke, in a very Speyside-esque way. However fans of Glenallachie will not be disappointed as the whiskies still have that rich Glenallachie spirit character which makes the whisky feel full bodied and viscose. The Original, The Chinquapin One, The Sherry One and The Turbo 2023 Edition are all 5 year old.
My personal favourite was The Chinquapin One which to me seemed to have the best balance of flavours, between wood, fruits and smoke but I would happily enjoy a dram of either of these four.
The Original
A 5 year old single malt, made with peat from St Fergus. Peated malt: 35ppm, matured in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels, american virgin oak casks and rye barrels. Bottled at 50%, natural colour and non-chill filtered.
The Sherry One
A 5 year old single malt, made with peat from St Fergus. Peated malt: 35ppm, matured in American oak ex-Bourbon barrels before being finished in pedro ximénez & oloroso sherry puncheons. Bottled at 48%, natural colour and non-chill filtered.
The Chinquapin One
A 5 year old single malt, made with peat from St Fergus. Peated malt: 35ppm, matured in American oak ex-bourbon casks before being finished in chinquapin new oak barrels. Bottled at 48%, natural colour and non-chill filtered.
The Turbo 2023 Edition
A 5 year old single malt, made with peated malt of 71ppm, matured in three American virgin oak casks and five oloroso hogsheads. Bottled at 50%, natural colour and non-chill filtered.
