We had the pleasure of visiting Umi, which is a Japanese restaurant located on Chapel Street near the Pleasance here in Edinburgh and try some food off of their menu.
The interior design feels very Japanese, with lots of wood details and you have both tables near the windows, or wooden booths like the one we sat in. They have plenty of options on the menu, from sushi and ramen to stonebowl fried rice and curry.
We opted for karate fried chicken to start followed by crunchy soy rolls (highly recommend!), salmon maki and tuna maki. This is a perfect place for sharing dishes, which is a really nice eating experience. Alongside the food we also had some Japanese beer, kombucha and a little dram of Yamazaki 12. I would really recommend a dram of whisky with food like sushi as the salty fat fish balanced really well alongside the spirit. Don’t miss giving this a go next time you are in the mood for both sushi and whisky!
Umi also has two sister restaurants: Kenji Sushi and Bentoya that are well worth checking out as well.
