Tucked away in Aberdeenshire you’ll find the lovely Maryculter House, one of the most historic hotels in the area. It sits right by the river and is a lovely spot for an overnight stay, a dinner or perhaps and afternoon tea.
Maryculter House
Maryculter House is a lovely spot to escape to the countryside. There’s plenty of little historic remains all around the grounds, like ruins and graves and of course the magnificent Great Hall inside the building where you can sit and enjoy a coffee or cocktail.
The Room
I was lucky enough to stay in one of the Junior Suites. A very comfortable and spacious room which had windows towards the courtyard and graveyard on two sides. The bathroom had a marble design with a bathtub and separate shower and some lovely products from Molton Brown, which felt very luxurious. I opened the window throughout the night for fresh air and had no issues with any uncomfortable noise.
Whisky Friday with Fettercairn
First up on the itinerary was a whisky tasting with Fettercairn. Maryculter House hosts events like this now and again so always worth checking as it was a great event. We started off with a hot toddy and haggis bonbons in the Great Hall before moving to the tasting room. The whiskies were even paired with canapés and it was my first time ever trying Battenberg cake (which was delicious). Fettercairn is also one of the closest distillery to Maryculter House so it made perfect sense that brand ambassador Gregor hosted us through a tasting of three of their core releases.
The Breakfast
The breakfast at Maryculter House is served in the restaurant next to the reception and you get to choose items of a menu. I went for different breakfasts each of the morning, starting strong with a Full Scottish Breakfast and opting for the slightly smaller bacon rolls the next. The bread for the rolls was great so those really stood out to me, as I really dislike when the bread is dry or flavourless.
Maryculter House Afternoon Tea
Maryculter House really impressed me with their high level of good food, which was really highlighted through their Afternoon Tea. The sandwiches were fresh, the sweets delicious and the atmosphere calm and relaxing. It was such a treat to enjoy the various flavour whilst seeing the countryside and river view through the window. The Battenberg cake, a chocolate mousse dome and the carrot cake were the highlights of the menu for me. They were all so fresh, with perfect texture and not too sweet – just right.
Maryculter House Burn’s Night
When I was visiting they were also hosting a Burn’s Night which was so much fun. The event took place in the interconnecting events space and we enjoyed a Glenfiddich highball, a Burn’s Night supper with traditional dishes like haggis and a Cranachan inspired ice cream for dessert. There was also a performance by a local dance school and the evening finished off with a ceilidh. Burn’s Night events are always fun, and even more so when the food is as good as it is at Maryculter!
