Yesterday I got the train across to Glasgow and headed to Crabshakk Botanics for the launch of MacMaillan Spirits.
MacMillan Spirits have released a gin, a rum and a whisky under their independent bottling branch but are also launching their Benbecula Distillery on Uist in the North Hebrides. The distillery and bottler is owned by father and son – Angus and Angus MacMillan – who have spent their lives on the Hebridean islands.
The three core releases in the range feature colourful artwork by Nick Dahlen from Minneapolis and are sure to appeal to perhaps a more modern drinker. I’ve written a bit more about each of the spirits that we got to try during the evening here below. Crabshakk Botanics also provided some lovely canapés like peach cake, oysters with gin granita and salmon rye bites.
Wheelhouse Whisky
This release is an eight year old single cask single malt from Islay. It’s bottled at 46% and has a lovely character of sweet yet ashy smoke with fresh bitter wood. A whisky that I believe would appeal to those looking for a robust, yet sweeter style of Islay whisky. Unfiltered and natural colour just like the gin and rum as well.
Machair Gin
Using botanicals like heather and Angelica root which have been harvested on Angus’s croft on Uist. A very approachable gin with good flavour that can be enjoyed neat or in a balanced gin tonic
Molucca Rum
An eight year golden molasses rum from the Caribbean. Bottled at 46% and very enjoyable. This one seemed to be most peoples favourite on the night where there were a big mixture of industry people, journalists, influencers and various friends of the brand.
